What used to be a gastropub in the cute lakeside village of Glasson is now a modern Irish restaurant located in the centre of Athlone.

This family-run dining establishment is one of the best places to eat in Athlone if you want to enjoy delicacies such as John Stone 30-day sirloin and scallops with balsamic strawberries.

The head chef at the Fatted Calf, Julian Pedraza uses seasonal and locally sourced ingredients for his mouthwatering dishes.

Try the lisduff black pudding or order their signature terrine of Horan’s smoked ham. I also like their extensive wine list, as well as the glass-walled dining room with a funky interior.

2. Thyme Restaurant (one of our favourite restaurants in Athlone)

Located in the heart of Athlone, Thyme has been serving delicious modern Irish food since 2007. The interior with an exposed brick bar and wooden floors looks spectacular.

The extensive food menu here offers both a la carte and set menus that are reasonably priced and include dishes like smoked bacon and Whelan’s black pudding potato cake and tea-smoked chicken and Cashel blue salad.

As for the a la carte menu, the options are plentiful with favourites such as duck confit with fig relish, pan-fried hake with lemon beurre, and baked goat’s cheese soufflé on beetroot.

For dessert, order chocolate fondant and get ready to be blown away with the perfectly balanced flavours. This is one of our favourite restaurants in Athlone and for good reason!

If you’re in search of top-notch Indian restaurants in Athlone, look no further than the Silver Oak. Located centrally on Church Street, this sit-in and takeaway spot offers both classic and modern Indian cuisine.

I had the chicken Kolhapur with curry leaves and mustard seeds some time ago and it was excellent. The Tandoori Shashlik is also a popular option and there are many types of rice dishes to choose from.

If you are a vegetarian, you won’t go hungry here. The potato curry is great, as is the mixed vegetable curry. They also have a small wine list and offer classic Indian desserts like Mango Lassi and Kulfi.

I forgot to mention that this restaurant in Athlone has its own small deli where they sell things like chocolate sauce and chilli dips.

For a taste of some fine Italian cuisine in Athlone, pay a visit to Il-Colosseo. With chefs and waiters from Italy and the finest imported ingredients, this authentic Italian joint has a small menu with options ranging from pizza to pasta.

I really liked their selection of pizza toppings, as well as the flavoursome homemade pasta sauces.

As for the interior, the walls are decorated with photos of Rome and the outdoor balcony is a great place to dine on a warm summer day.

Las Radas Wine & Tapas Bar is one of the newest restaurants in Athlone. It’s a Spanish tapas bar with an extensive list of sharing platters.

I like eating tapas-style and sampling many different dishes at the same time. Therefore, I was really looking forward to checking out this restaurant.

The first thing I noticed that this is not your typical tapas bar with the same old boring menu.

Whether you are in the mood for pigs ears and falafel or you wish to try their liver pate and octopus, the menu is really creative and offers something for everyone.
