1. Eccles Hotel

I’d argue that the first of our Glengarriff hotels, Eccles, is one of the best spa hotels in Ireland (it’s one of the best hotels in Cork, anyway!).

William Thackeray Makepeace described the Eccles Hotel as a “Pretty Inn” in 1870, and even though it’s far from being an Inn now, it’s still a pretty place in one of the most stunning locations in Ireland.

Unusually (because most often these buildings started life as stately homes), the site has hosted accommodation since 1745, and you can easily get lost in the history of the place.

The hotel is located in Glengarriff, overlooking Bantry Bay, and offers panoramic views of the ocean. The staff are upbeat and friendly, and if you’re after a relaxing break, the Spa is not to be beaten.

2. Casey’s Hotel

You can tell from the outside that Casey’s is a proper traditional Irish hotel and you’ll often see it tipped as one of the best hotels in Cork.

I worked in hotels as a teenager, and I have a feel for them. Hearty meals, warm company, and nothing too much trouble, Casey’s has it all.

This is one of a handful of family-run hotels in Glengarriff, just a 30-minute drive from Castletownbere and is popular for its locally produced ingredients and seafood.

The staff obviously contribute hugely to the welcoming atmosphere with their professionalism and attention to detail; the only downside is you need to book ahead as it can be challenging to get a table due to its popularity. And rightly so!

The hotel is also a short, 2-minute drive from Glengarriff Nature Reserve – a spot that’s well-known for its beauty and abundance of forest trails.

1. Glengarriff Park Hotel

Set in 60 acres of nature reserve on the Beara Peninsula, the Glengarriff Park Hotel is a great base for exploring the West Cork area. It’s family-run, and the staff are friendly, helpful, and always have time for a chat and to make you feel at home.

There’s a choice between eating in The Park Bistro, where fine dining is the order of the day or bar food in the traditional Irish pub, MacCarthy’s Bar. Enjoy the craic with the locals who frequent the bar and enjoy live music at weekends.

The car park at the back is the icing on the cake in this busy village. This is one of the most popular hotels in West Cork for good reason.

1. The Black Sheep

If you’re looking for a B&B with great hosts, lovely food and an ideal location to explore the Beara Peninsula, the Black Sheep is perfect. Close to the main street of Glengarriff, you can sit out on the terrace and admire the gorgeous garden and watch the river as it meanders past.

The lovely hosts can’t do enough for you and are full of local knowledge, so you’re well-armed when you go out to explore. Visitors are also welcome to pop in for a cup of tea and a scone.

2. The Botanical B&B

With an outlook to Bantry Bay, the Botanical B&B is found in The Garden of Re-Imagination’ in Glengarriff. Each of the four bedrooms has a botanical theme and a unique character. The breakfasts are organic and homegrown with a smattering of wild ingredients from the surrounding area.

The hosts, Kloe and Adam, have created a haven that they generously share with their guests. From the edible garden to the wooden bridges across the trickling stream, the feeling of tranquillity makes it almost retreat-like. Sitting out in the garden on a summer’s night is not to be missed.

3. Ardnagashel Estate Holiday Homes

These holiday homes for four people are surrounded by woodland and their own gorgeous gardens. Its nearest neighbour is the lovely little village of Ballylickey, a 5-minute drive away.

Pets are allowed on request (Yay!) at the cost of €30 per stay. The spotless kitchens are well stocked with all you need in the way of pots and pans etc., and the open fireplace with stove gives the cottages a cosy feel.

Sit out on a deck after dark, enjoying the glint of moonlight off the ocean and finding your favourite constellations in the night sky.
