A 1 Day Killarney Itinerary For An Unforgettable 24 Hours

1 day in Killarney isn’t a huge amount of time to see all of the various sights. However, with a well-planned itinerary, it’s definitely manageable.

This guide provides you with two different itineraries:

  • Itinerary 1: For those looking to explore by bike (you can rent one)
  • Itinerary 2: For those driving and for those taking the hop-on/off bus

So, before taking a look at the 2 ways of spending 24 hours in Killarney, it’s worth getting a sense of where to stay around the town.

The map above outlines where to stay in Killarney area-wise. Personally, I think you’re best off in the town itself, especially when you’re only there for 1 day.

Accommodation recommendations: Kingdom Lodge is a good budget option, Killarney Avenue is mid range while The Killarney Park is luxury

The map above will give you a clear sense of where this day will take you. As you can see, the different attractions in Killarney are quite spread out, so you can’t avoid doubling back on yourself.

Rent a bike from the bike rental spot on the Muckross Road (there’s plenty of parking) and then head off on your merry way.

The highlight from the first 1/2 of the day is the brilliant 1-hour Lakes of Killarney Cruise that leaves from near Ross Castle.

1 day Killarney itinerary for those driving/getting the bus

If you have a car, happy days – you’ll be able to zip around Killarney Town with ease. Depending on where you stop, you may also have time to see the first two stops on the Ring of Kerry DriveLadies View and Moll’s Gap (not pictured on the map above).

If you don’t have a car for your 1 day in Killarney, don’t worry – the hop-on/hop-off bus takes you to all of the stops shown above.

Below, I’ll take you through the itinerary for those driving from stop-to-stop.

Stop 1. A caffeine fix from the Curious Cat

Down a quiet side street, the Curious Cat Café serves up hearty breakfasts, handmade pastries, and excellent coffee in cat-inspired setting.

The menu includes everything from veggie skillets and gluten-free avocado toast to loaded sandwiches, fries, and sweet crepes.

Both vegan and meat-lovers are well catered for, and you can sip on everything from detox smoothies to creamy chai lattes. A fine way to kick-start your 1 day Killarney itinerary!

Stop 2. Step back in time at St. Mary’s Cathedral

Once you’re caffeinated, take a 10-minute stroll to St. Mary’s Cathedral, a Gothic Revival church created by famed architect Augustus Pugin.

Crafted from limestone and inspired by Ardfert Cathedral’s ruins, its construction began in 1842 but was slowed by famine and lack of funds, finishing in 1855.

With its tall spire, narrow lancet windows, and quiet setting, it has a serene, monastic presence. Despite 1970s modifications, much of its historic charm still shines through.

Stop 3. Saunter around Killarney House and Gardens

Next up is Killarney House and Gardens, about a 15-minute walk from St. Mary’s, where pristine gardens meet the wild expanse of Killarney National Park.

Part of the old Kenmare Estate, the house was refurbished in the 1950s by American millionaire John McShain, who later sold much of the land to the state.

Entry to the gardens is free and it’s one of the easiest gateways into the park — with scenic views, well-kept lawns, and meandering trails.

Inside the house, you’ll find displays on its rich history, including ties to Queen Victoria and the Earls of Kenmare.

Stop 4. Explore Ross Castle

Hop in the car and make your way to Ross Castle — about 15 minutes from the town centre.

Those of you taking the bus can check out the various pickup points here. The castle sits right on Lough Leane and dates back to the 15th century.

Built by the powerful O’Donoghue clan, legend says O’Donoghue rises from the lake every seven years atop a white steed.

There’s 2 ways of seeing it:

  • Option 1: Take it in from the outside
  • Option 2: Join the €5 guided tour (no booking required)

Stop 5. Kick-back on the Killarney Lakes cruise

One of the most popular things to do in Killarney can be found right beside Ross Castle — the scenic Lakes of Killarney cruise.

The 1-hour trip across Lough Léin takes you by wooded islands, with sightings of red deer, sea eagles, and views of Innisfallen’s ancient monastery and Carrauntoohil, Ireland’s tallest mountain.

The boat has a glass roof and heating, making it a fine outing in all weather. The onboard guide weaves in local tales with plenty of humour. This is a handy way of taking it easy while still seeing a good chunk of the surrounding scenery.

Stop 6. Lunch

Bricin

You’re only halfway through your 1 day in Killarney, but you’ve packed in a lot already! After your cruise, it’s time for lunch. Head back to the town centre and settle in for a bite.

While there’s no shortage of great places to eat in Killarney, Bricin stands out for its homely setting, friendly staff, and Irish-inspired dishes.

Their signature boxty — a traditional potato pancake — comes filled with options like lamb, seafood, or chicken. You’ll also find chowder, duck, crab claws, and tasty desserts.

Stop 7. Killarney’s famous sites

There’s plenty more to see and do after lunch. If you’re taking the bus, head to a pickup spot in town and then stop at the Abbey followed by Torc.

If you’re driving, head for:

Food

There are plenty of excellent restaurants in Killarney. My favourites are:

Pubs and live music

You’ll find some cracking pubs in Killarney. JM Reidy’s, The Laurels, and O’Connors all serve up traditional vibes with plenty of charm and character along with regular live music.
