We cover a lot of unique accommodation in Ireland on this site.
However, few of the places that we’ve written about, if any, are as unique as this brand new shipping container that’s sprung up in West Donegal.
Finely plonked on a site that overlooks Traighenna Bay, this quirky Airbnb offers couples or friends a very funky base to explore the Wild Atlantic Way from.
A luxury lakeside shipping container
You’ll find this luxury converted shipping container on private land down a long stone track in West Donegal.
A stone’s throw from the beautiful Dooey Beach (5-minute drive), it’s a very quirky (and cosy) base to explore the county from.
As you can see from the photo above, the container hangs over the water, which means those that visit can enjoy views from both inside and out.
Mighty views from the breakfast table (and the decking!)
This gorgeous little gaff is nice and bright thanks to massive windows that look right out over the lake.
You can soak up the views as you chomp away on your breakfast, or you can take your coffee out onto the outdoor decking area and sip it while you watch the sunrise.
The container is a handy 5 minute spin from Lettermacaward, where you’ll find shops, pubs and everything you need if you’re feeling peckish or if you fancy a pint.
What to expect if you visit
The container is well-equipped for a weekend away. There’s one bedroom with a double bed that’s kitted out with a ‘great mattress’, according to the hosts.
There’s also a 32″ Netflix Smart TV, a bathroom with a large double shower, heated towel rail and a kitchen with:
- A fan oven
- An induction hob
- A fridge freezer
- A microwave and toaster
How the hosts describe it
‘A piece of modern design dropped onto the Wild Atlantic coast – a luxury-converted shipping container on its own small coastal lake overlooking Traighenna Bay, West Donegal.
WiFi and Netflix provided, thermostatically heated for year-round use, pets welcome (fee applies), a luxury retreat for two – for designers, architects, or just those that love to experience the wilderness of Donegal in comfort.’
How much a night will set you back
To check the price, I lashed in 2 nights in October (it’s booked up until then!) for two people sharing. It worked out at:
- Total: €317
- Per person: €158.50
