Lisdoonvarna may be a small village in The Burren with just 739 or so residents, but it is Ireland’s leading spa town (since 1845) and it’s home to the now-iconic Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival.

The town also makes a great base for exploring many of the most popular places to visit in Clare, like nearby Doolin and the Cliffs of Moher.

1. Sheedys Country House Hotel

First up is arguably one of the best hotels in Clare. Set in an 18th century country house, the boutique Sheedys Country House Hotel in Lisdoonvarna boasts great hospitality, top-notch grub and an excellent location.

Owned and operated by the Sheedy family, it holds 2 AA Rosettes for its restaurant along with elegantly furnished rooms, polished timber floors and attractive antiques that create a very memorable setting.

For those of you attention the festival, Sheedy’s is a handy 1-minute walk from the famous The Matchmaker Bar!

This place is widely regarded as one of the best hotels in Lisdoonvarna for good reason!

2. Royal Spa Hotel

Located on Main Street in the heart of Lisdoonvarna, the historic stone-built hotel has been welcoming visitors to the town and spa since before the Great Famine!

Set in a listed heritage building, the Royal Spa Hotel offers a calm relaxing haven with just 12 comfortably furnished rooms so you can be sure of personal and attentive service.

Enjoy a tasty home-cooked breakfast before heading out hiking and exploring this scenic area. Guests have a comfortable lounge area, a bar, garden and there’s a café  serving light meals including their famous Seafood Chowder.

Ideal for couples, families and groups, the homes all have 2 bathrooms. There’s a modern fully fitted kitchen for preparing breakfast, picnics and more ambitious family meals.

Each house also has dining and sitting areas with flatscreen TV and free Wi-Fi. Guests can make use of their own private rear terrace for sitting out with a beer after a busy day exploring the Wild Atlantic Way

As serene and beautiful as the surrounding Burren landscape (there’s some brilliant Burren walks nearby), Ballinsheen House and Gardens offers 4 star guest accommodation in the boutique B&B just 5 minutes from Lisdoonvarna.

Set in a modern architect-designed house and surrounded by landscaped gardens it offers a boutique experience to discerning guests with superior king and family-size bedrooms and suites.

There’s also two guest sitting rooms with open fire and original artworks and panoramic windows with delightful garden views.

If the various hotels in Lisdoonvarna are too close to the action for you, this makes a very comfortable base for the festival.

2. Imperial Hotel Lodge

Another Main Street landmark in Lisdoonvarna, the Imperial Lodge Hotel is in a superb central location close to pubs, shops and restaurants.

Guests can relax in the pleasant conservatory just off the main lobby. Bedrooms are traditionally furnished and well-equipped with flatscreen TV, hairdryer, tea and coffee-making facilities and ensuite bathrooms.

Wi-Fi is available in public areas. This hotel also has a restaurant serving hearty Irish breakfasts and international cuisine.

Put your feet up by the fireside in the lounge and enjoy a few pints in the bar with live music in the evening. 

3. Elements B&B

Surrounded by stunning countryside and views to Slieve Elva, the B&B is an easy 10 minute stroll from the Victorian spa town of Lisdoonvarna.

This spacious house has 6 Bedrooms, all ensuite with power showers, flatscreen TVs and tea/coffee making facilities.

You’ll sleep on luxury memory foam mattresses behind blackout curtains – but don’t miss the excellent breakfast cooked to order.

4. Wild Honey Inn

The award-winning 19th century Wild Honey Inn is located a handy 5-minute stroll from Lisdoonvarna mainstreet.

It is Ireland’s only dining pub to be awarded a Michelin star (since 2018) with delicious cuisine prepared by chef/owner Aidan McGrath and his team.

Ensuite bedrooms have chic decor and luxury touches such as duck down duvets, Egyptian cotton sheets, quality antique furnishings and superb views to wake up to.

Opt for a Garden Room and you’ll probably never want to leave!
