There’s some delicious spots for breakfast in Limerick in 2024.
And, while some places tend to get all of the attention online, there’s plenty of ‘hidden’ gems worth trying.
Below, you’ll find everywhere from the Buttery and Bakehouse 22 to some often-missed Limerick breakfast spots.
The best breakfast in Limerick

The first section of the guide is packed with my favourite Limerick breakfast spots.
Expect everywhere from Green Yard Cafe and Hook & Ladder to The Buttery and more!
1. The Buttery, Bedford Row

Easily one of the swishest spots in the centre of town, The Buttery is a novel blend of a street cafe and formal restaurant.
The sleek interior is perfect for those chilly or rainy days while their outdoor area makes a nice sunny-day option.
Food-wise, it’s the All Day breakfast options that keeps us heading back to The Buttery, with buttermilk pancakes, French toast, or the Buttery breakfast that’ll fill you right up, you’ll be set up for the day ahead and ready to explore the city’s attractions.
2. Hook & Ladder

Eclectic and fun, with packing crates building a cosy nook-filled wall, leather-backed bench seating, and funky wooden chairs, Hook & Ladder carves out a fresh style.
Grab a muffin or slice with a coffee or tea from the counter for a quick breakfast to go, or settle in for a proper nosh.
If you’re feeling health-conscious, go for the acai smoothie fruit bowl, or if you want something with a bit more bite and chew, head to their breakfast classics section.
That’s where you’ll find options like the Ampersand, Piggy in the Middle, or the Vegan Blaa.

3. Green Yard Cafe

Outside it’s plain and understated, but inside the Green Yard Cafe boasts an urban industrial aesthetic with an open plan layout of metal chairs and dark wooden tables.
This unassuming cafe on busy New Street is a hive of activity with locals and tourists alike enjoying its relaxed atmosphere and tasty treats.
The Green Yard Cafe’s brunch menu is filled with tempting dishes, like a warm vegan Wonka bowl, avocado on toast, a breakfast burrito, pancakes or French toast, and even poached eggs with sides of your choosing.
4. Story Café

Story Cafe on Denmark Street is a fine spot for an early-mornig feed.
Fill up for your day of adventure with the Mega Story Breakfast or opt for the porridge or granola with fruit or yoghurt.
There’s also crepes, veggie options and a banging brekkie bagel. This is one of the most popular spots for breakfast Limerick has to offer for good reason.

5. Canteen

Bright and breezy, easy on the eye, and not at all in your face. This cafe will be your new favourite Limerick breakfast spot.
The Canteen’s focus on fast, simple, local, and delicious food makes it a winner and, judging by the exceptional reviews online, we’re not the only ones to think so.
You can warm up with a bowl of porridge with bananas and blueberries, or go straight for the plates of poached eggs with beans, or a breakfast burrito.
6. The Horse and Hound Bar

The Horse and Hound serves more than just lunches and dinners, and they’ve embraced the sentiment that breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
Sit down at any of the bar stools, or a table as you prefer, and get stuck into a proper plate full of your favourite breakfast dishes; full Irish, beans and eggs, sausage gravy and biscuits with a side of chips, or a hearty steak breakfast!
If you’re looking for places to grab a hearty breakfast in Limerick, The Horse and Hound won’t disappoint.
7. Café Rosé

Popular with locals and visitors alike, Café Rosé is small but packs a punch.
Choose from the usual lighter favourites like granola and yoghurt pots, bacon with crepes and maple syrup, or crepes with fruit.
You can of course choose a fuller plate, with a Full Irish, or poached-to-order eggs with avocado and bacon. Lighter to-go options include bakes and slices with a delicious coffee.
8. The Locke Bar

With shades of New Orleans’ most famous spot, Cafe du Monde, the vibe at The Locke Bar is certainly a buzzing one.
Opposite the sweeping green canvas you’ll find seats and tables that overlook the river, inside there is a bar and an eating area, both are relaxed and inviting.
Breakfast may not be the sole focus of this venue, but it certainly isn’t skimping on it either.
You won’t be torn over which dish to choose – the menu is concise with family favourites like homemade granola, eggs Benedict, or the Full Irish for the super hungry.
You can also get a great coffee and a scone to go if you prefer!
