The Best Cheapest Pint Of Guinness In Dublin: 5 Pubs With Tasty Pints For Under €5

The Best Cheapest Pint Of Guinness In Dublin: 5 Pubs With Tasty Pints For Under €5

A couple of Fridays ago I ended up in my happy place. With the din of jovial conversation being interrupted only by the interlude provided from the hiss of gas from a Guinness tap.

I was plonked upon a bar stool and had been mesmerised by the surge of nitrogen within the vessel from which I’d soon be drinking.

As it was finally topped off and planted on front of me so I could take my first well-earned slug – I could think of one thing and one thing only – Woolly Jumpers.

UPDATE: This guide was penned a few years ago, so it’s highly likely that the prices listed for many of the Dublin pubs below has changed, so keep that in mind.

No, seriously – if you’re anything like me, you might have picked up on a story that ran in the media a few weeks back regarding the cheapest pints of Guinness available in Dublin – the research, while appreciated, struck me as strange given that it had been commissioned by a company whose sole purpose it is, is to sell Aran Sweaters.

So that’s why I had images of Clancy brothers swirling around in my head as that first velvet gulp cascaded down my throat those few weeks back.

Now far be it from me to knock the pubs listed as those purveying Dublin’s cheapest pints, after all – I’ve been to all of them at one stage or another.

The BEST Cheapest Pint of Guinness in Dublin for under a fiver

But as I perused the list, I couldn’t help but think that a finer line between price and ambience could be achieved.

So without further ado, let me put my money where my mouth is and present to you – what I believe to be five of the best pints of Guinness which you can get for under a fiver in Dublin.

1. Kavanagh’s (Glasnevin)

The Gravediggers is the archetype of ‘The’ Dublin Pub, and indeed The Irish Pub too.

Into its eighth generation of family ownership, we once read a quote from one of the proprietors alluding to their Guinness being priced in a similar manner to a local wine in Italy – fairly.

Thy pour the best pint of Guinness in Dublin (and therefore in turn, Ireland & The World too) and hits the pocket for €4.80 (Last Visit February 2019).

2. J. M. Cleary’s (Amiens St.)

There’s a great many pubs in Dublin which have links with Michael Collins, but Cleary’s is the one which is most synonymous with The Big Fella.

Sitting in the relatively dark shadow cast by the Loopline Bridge, the pub is said to have had its electric bill paid for by Iarnrod Eireann as compensation for the obstruction.

It would seem that this saving is passed onto the customer – €4.40 was the agreeable sum I happily parted with for a very tasty jar when last here. (Last Visit December 2018)

3. J O’ Connell’s (Portobello)

J O Connells is a cosy older boozer that sits, as if an oasis, upon the fringes of the desert of high price madness that is the Camden St. District.

You can tuck into a creamy jar of porter here for €4.80. (Last Visit November 2018).

4. Peadar Browne’s (Clanbrassil St.)

If you’re looking for the authentic version of the atmosphere they seek to recreate for profit in our capital’s tourist bars, look no further than Peadar Browne’s.

With a fantastic seisiún on every Saturday afternoon, you can take in a proper session for a fairer price – with a pint going for €4.60 a pop (Last Visit December 2018)

5. Kimchi Hophouse (Parnell St.)

With the Parnell Street area getting trendier by the day, you should make sure to pay a visit to the pub that bucked the trend.

Proving that people from Korea pour pints as good as those from Kimmage, the hophouse will dole you out a quality pour at the rate of €4.50 a scoop (Last Visit October 2018)
