1. Donnie Brasco

First up is, in our opinion, the best film on Netflix Ireland if you fancy an old-school movie that’ll keep you gripped from start to finish.

This classic film is one of the best true mafia crime dramas ever made. The film is loosely based on the true story of an undercover FBI agent.

Joe Pistone, who infiltrated the Bonanno family in New York during the 1970s. It has a star-studded cast with Johnny Depp, Al Pacino, Anne Heche and Michael Madsen.

2. 50/50

You might not immediately think that a movie about cancer could also be a comedy but with Seth Rogan anything is possible. This comedy-drama film is about a 27-year-old radio journalist who is diagnosed with spinal cancer.

The story touches on friendship and love as he navigates the terminal illness with his best buddy by his side. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogan and Anna Kendrick.

3. Marriage Story

If you’re after a deep and touching drama movie, this is one of the best on Netflix Ireland. It’ll make you laugh, cry and smile all at the same time.

The film has a great cast with Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Laura Dern. The story follows a stage director and his actor wife who struggle through an impending divorce while trying to keep their family together.

4. Uncut Gems

Uncut Gems is an American crime drama film directed by Josh and Benny Safdie. It’s an unlikely film for Adam Sandler but his performance in this show has been widely applauded.

The story is about a charismatic jeweller and gambling addict played by Sandler who has to retrieve an expensive gem he purchased to pay off his debts.

5. The Equalizer

Who doesn’t love a good Denzel Washington film? If you’re in the mood for a good action movie then settle in for this film directed by Antoine Fuqua.

The story follows Robert McCall played by Washington who assumed that he’d put his mysterious past behind him until he returns from retirement to protect a young girl from a group of Russian mobsters.

6. Prisoners

A truly great crime thriller with a stellar cast, Prisoners was a huge success when it was released in 2013. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Paul Dano and Terrence Howard.

The story goes that when Keller Dover’s daughter and her friend go missing and the police take their time to find them, he decides to take matters into his own hands. The desperation leads to the truth but also jeopardises Dover’s own life.

7. The Revenant

This film finally got Leonardo DiCaprio his first and well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actor. It’s a moving film by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu with superb performances by DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.

The film follows Hugh Glass played by DiCaprio who is severely injured from a bear attack and abandoned by his hunting crew. He uses his incredible survival skills to get back and take revenge on his companion played by Hardy who betrayed him.

8. Gladiator

This is a true classic and a must-see film for every movie buff. The British-American action drama directed by Ridley Scott is loosely based on real events from the Roman Empire.

The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus who demotes his father’s preferred general, Maximus played by Russell Crowe and kills his family. Maximus is then left to fight till death as a gladiator in order to seek his revenge.

9. A Quiet Place

This is a post-apocalyptic thriller directed by and starring John Krasinski. If you’re up for an intriguing horror movie, give this one a go.

The story is about a family who struggles to survive in a world which has been devasted by blind, noise-sensitive creatures. They have to use sign language in order to survive and keep the animals away.

10. The Irishman

There was so much buzz surrounding this film before it was released on Netflix, but it truly lives up to it all. Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, this is an epic long crime drama film.

It centres around Frank Sheeran, a hit man, who looks back at his secrets as a loyal member of the Bufalino crime family.

11. Burn After Reading

A classic dark comedy written, directed, produced and edited by the Cohen brothers. It stars Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, George Clooney and Frances McDormand.

The story follows two gym employees who find a CD containing memoirs of a CIA agent. They decide to try and sell it back to him, of which their back-up plan is to sell it onto the Russian embassy.

Now, it’s worth noting that although the below new movies on Netflix Ireland are new to the platform, they’re not necessarily recent releases.

Some of the films below, like Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, were released a long time ago, while others, like the new one from David Attenborough, are just out.

1. David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet

It should be humankind’s duty to watch this moving documentary by Sir David Attenborough. It’s billed as his witness statement to the world, as the great broadcaster recounts his life and the history of the planet to demonstrate the devastating loss of the planet’s biodiversity over the course of his lifetime.

It’s incredibly moving and thought-provoking and should be next on your to-watch list tonight. This has easily been one of the most hyped movies on Netflix Ireland in a while.

2. Enola Holmes

A highly anticipated film of 2020, Enola Holmes is a mystery film based on the first book in the series by Nancy Springer.

The film has already been praised with great performances by Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, Louis Partridge and Sam Claflin.

The story follows the teenage sister of the already-famous Sherlock Holmes who heads to London to find their mother who has disappeared.

3. The Social Dilemma

For another incredibly eye-opening and challenging documentary, The Social Dilemma dives into the dangerous impacts of social media and the internet.

The film interviews former employees from the big tech companies and social media channels to paint the concerning picture of how society and individuals have been manipulated by these companies. It’ll make you reconsider your own social media use.

4. First Man

First Man is an American biographical drama film based on the life of a young Neil Armstrong in the lead-up to his unlikely journey to the moon. It’s based on the non-fiction book, which was released by James Hansen, Armstrong’s official biographer.

Ryan Gosling plays Armstrong, the American NASA test pilot, along with his fellow Apollo Program team members who set out to land on the moon. The movie also stars Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler and Corey Stoll.

5. The Boys In The Band

This American drama film is directed by Joe Mantello and based on the 1968 play by Mart Crowley. The film stars the full cast from the play’s Broadway revival in 2018 who are all openly gay actors including Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer, Zachary Quinto and Andrew Rannells.

The story is about a group of gay friends who reunite to celebrate a birthday in Manhattan in 1968. When the host’s straight roommate shows up, the evening is thrown into chaos.

6. A United Kingdom

This British biographical romantic drama is based on an incredible true story. The movie stars Rosamund Pike as Ruth Williams, a British white woman who falls in love with King-to-be Seretse Khama of Botswana, played by David Oyelowo.

The true-life romance was a controversial one but it’s a beautifully inspiring film that gives an insight into southern Africa during the 1940s.

7. Kiss The Ground

This documentary narrated by and featuring Woody Harrelson offers a ground-breaking viable solution to our climate crisis.

The film takes a more hopeful look at the future of the planet by getting activists, scientists, farmers and politicians to explain the benefits of regenerative agriculture which can save the world’s topsoil and combat climate change.

8. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

This old teen favourite has finally made its way onto Netflix. This romantic drama teen film is based on the popular 2001 book by Ann Brashares.

The film stars America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, Blake Lively and Alexis Bledel as four best friends who spend their first summer apart from each other.

They stay connected by sending a pair of jeans to each other that magically fits all of them. It’s the ultimate girl’s night chick flick.

What to Watch on Netflix Ireland if you’re in need of a laugh

1. White Chicks

This classic comedy film is about two disgraced FBI agents played by Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans who are assigned to a new case. They go undercover in order to protect two cruise line heiresses from getting abducted.

It may not be the best film on this list but the hilarious jokes as the two black detectives disguise themselves as very preppy white women will give you a good few giggles.

Rotten Tomatoes review score: 15% (this is clearly a nonsense score… this is one of the top movies on Netflix Ireland if you fancy an easy watch that delivers loads of laughs!) 

2. The Other Guys

Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell team up in this American cop action comedy film by Adam McKay. It has a long list of A-list supporting cast including, Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Samuel L Jackson, Dwayne Johnson and Steve Coogan.

The two mismatched detectives in New York City have an opportunity to step up their game by investigating a case involving a shady capitalist.

3. O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Another great Coen brothers classic, this crime comedy film stars George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson and John Goodman.

It’s based in the deep south during the 1930s, as three escaped convicts go searching for hidden treasure that Ulysses had buried before getting caught while a persistent lawman chases them.

4. Step Brothers

Another film by Adam McKay and Will Ferrell for this list, with the addition of funny man John C Reilly. For many people, Step Brothers is one of the funniest of Will Ferrell’s movies and it’s guaranteed to make you laugh. 

The film is about two middle-aged men who still live at home and are forced to live together when their parents decide to get married.

5. The Hangover

One of the all-time great comedies of our time, The Hangover was an absolute smashing success when it came out and you can easily watch it many times over and still laugh.

The story follows Doug and his three best friends as they go to Las Vegas for his bachelor party. The following day, the three men wake up to find that Doug is missing, and they must find him. The movie has a stellar cast with Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha and Ken Jeong.

6. Get Him to the Greek

This ridiculously funny movie is nothing short of entertaining. The film stars Russell Brand as an English rock star Aldous Snow and Jonah Hill as Aaron, an ordinary employee at a record company in LA.

Due to the recession, Aaron is given the career-defining task by his boss to get Aldous Snow to LA within 72 hours in which sends him on a crazy journey to London.

The Best Irish Movies on Netflix

1. Bad Day For The Cut

If you haven’t watched this one yet, you’re in for a treat – this is easily one of the best films on Netflix Ireland. It’s also one of the most overlooked.

This Northern Irish action thriller film is directed by Chris Baugh. It’s a little gem of an action film on Netflix if you’re after a good watch. It stars Nigel O’Neill as a farmer who embarks on a violent quest to avenge his mother’s death.

While getting lost in the criminal underworld in Belfast, he discovers her dark secret side. This is easily one of the best movies on Netflix Ireland.

2. Mickybo and Me

Another Northern Ireland-based film, this much-loved comedy-drama is directed and written by Terry Loane.

The story is set in 1970, as two boys from different backgrounds bond over a shared appreciation for cinema and in particular, for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. After seeing a screening for the film, they run away to Australia.

3. Bobby Sands: 66 Days

An insightful documentary, this film explores the story of Bobby Sands and the 1981 Irish hunger strike from Northern Ireland.

It uses extracts from Sands’ diary and footage from the archives, as well as, interviews with journalists, historians and sociologists to offer a well-rounded look at this period of Irish history.

4. Handsome Devil

This Irish comedy-drama was written and directed by John Butler and originally screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

It tells the story of two unlikely friends, one a loner and the other a top athlete, as they navigate a rugby-obsessed all-boys school. They struggle to survive their classmates’ bullying with the assistance of a sympathetic teacher.
