Located just offshore from the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, Valentia Island has plenty of things to see and do to keep you busy.
And, luckily enough, there’s some excellent B&Bs, Airbnbs and hotels on Valentia Island to base yourself, as you’ll discover below.
Our favourite Valentia Island accommodation
The first section of our guide is packed with our favourite Valentia Island accommodation options.
Below, you’ll find the only hotel on Valentia Island to some B&Bs that’ll act as a cosy home-from-home.
1. Royal Valentia Hotel
The Royal Valentia Hotel is rumoured to be one of the finest hotels in South Kerry! This heritage building is situated right on the harbour waterfront.
Thirty recently refurbished rooms and suites boast incredible views across Portmagee Channel to the Iveragh Peninsula.
Contemporary bathrooms, four poster beds (in the deluxe Four Poster Rooms) and a Royal Bar and Restaurant provide everything you could wish for and make a wonderful base for exploring the island.
2. Carraig Liath House
Carraig Liath House offers pleasant bed and breakfast accommodation on Valentia Island. Overlooking Portmagee (a picturesque fishing village to stroll and explore) Carraig Liath House is one of the first places you’ll see after crossing the bridge to Valentia Island.
Comfortably furnished rooms are tastefully decorated and there’s a spacious self-catering apartment option with full kitchen and dishwasher if you want to stay a while longer.
All rooms have superb views, ensuite bathrooms, tea/coffee makers and the price includes a tasty continental breakfast.
3. Cuas a’ Gamhna
Cuas a’ Gamhna offers excellent bed and breakfast accommodation in a quiet scenic location with sea views. It’s 3km from the Skellig Experience Centre.
Rooms all have private bathrooms (some separate not ensuite), hairdryers and free toiletries. They sleep up to four guests in double to family rooms.
The comfortable accommodation is highly recommended by past guests and includes free parking, Wi-Fi and a continental breakfast.
After a day’s hiking and sightseeing, relax in the garden or on the terrace. Bike rentals are available for a separate fee.
4. Horizon View Bed and Breakfast
Horizon View B&B lives up to its name with outstanding sea views from the elevated location near Knights Town, Valentia Island Lighthouse and the Valentia Island Ferry.
Guests are welcome to make use of the shared lounge and garden as well as a balcony for sunset vistas.
Budget single, double, twin and family rooms (sleep 4) include Wi-Fi and a flatscreen TV and most have sea views to wake up to.
Ensuite bathrooms have a shower, hairdryer and toiletries. The friendly host serves an excellent full Irish breakfast which can be enjoyed with perfect views of the lighthouse and sea.
5. A New U Country Cottage
Highly recommended by past guests, a New U Country Cottage is in a stunning location with views of Portmagee and the Kerry Cliffs.
Rooms are well furnished with wooden flooring, traditional furnishings and comfy mattresses. The adjoining ensuite bathrooms are spotless.
As well as bedrooms, there is also a spacious newly renovated self-catering unit. Enjoy a hearty breakfast each morning while picking up tips from the host, Marie, on local restaurants and places to visit.
This guesthouse is a short drive from Valentia Island Beach, the Bray Head Walk and many of the islands top attractions.
6. Reenglas House
Check into Reenglas House B&B and appreciate the superb setting and sea views. The B&B is right on the beach front, 1km from Knights Town and the Valentia Heritage Centre.
This well-priced B&B offers guest rooms with private bathrooms for two guests in a beautiful 18th century country house. Large gardens with parking lead down to the shore.
Rooms are furnished in traditional style and most have sea views. Dressing gowns are provided for relaxing before bed.
There’s a dining room, a guest lounge with fireplace and a garden with patio for enjoying views of Valentia Harbour. Free parking included.
Great places to stay near Valentia Island
Now that we have the various Valentia Island Accommodation options out of the way, it’s time to see where there is to sleep nearby.
Below, you’ll find beach-side B&Bs and one of our favourite hotels in Kerry to some cheap-and-cheerful options.
1. The Moorings Hotel
The Mooring Hotel at Portmagee enjoys spectacular scenery from its location on the Skellig Ring. Accommodation is bright and spacious with contemporary furnishings and superb sea/harbour views.
White bedding is enhanced by vibrant accents in the curtains and cushions, creating a luxury ambience to match the efficiency and hospitality.
Rooms are fully equipped with Wi-Fi, satellite TV, iron, tea/coffee facilities and pull-out beds on request for children. Luxury extras include marble bathrooms in some cases.
This lovely hotel has a friendly Bridge Bar and renowned restaurant which serves the best quality local seafood dishes along with artisan breads.
2. The Waterfront B&B
Right on the waterfront in the picturesque fishing village of Portmagee, this upscale B&B overlooks Valentia Island from the mainland.
There are shops, pubs and restaurants just 200m from the door. Spacious bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities and comfy beds.
Guests have a cosy lounge with Sky TV and a library for relaxing and there’s ample free parking. The bridge to Valentia Island is nearby and the Skellig Experience Centre is a 6-minute walk away.
Look forward to the breakfast buffet of cereals, fruit juices and full Irish breakfasts cooked to order.
3. Sea Breeze Bed and Breakfast Cahersiveen
Sea Breeze B&B is in a large family home surrounded by pretty gardens with sea views. It’s located right on the wild Atlantic Way in Cahersiveen, 2.5km from Valentia Island Ferry and Knights Town.
Comfortable accommodation and wholesome cuisine makes this a top place to stay a night or two. Bedrooms are well appointed and include ensuite bathroom facilities.
The breakfast menu is enticing with French toast and a choice of toppings, oatmeal porridge, a healthy breakfast option or even smoked kippers!
Guest have use of the garden and conservatory where afternoon tea is served.
4. Butler Arms Hotel
The four star Butler Arms Hotel in Waterville has beautifully furnished rooms with private bathrooms, satellite TVs and a seating area. It enjoys superb Atlantic Ocean views.
Ballinskelligs Bay is right across the road and the beach is handy for a pre-breakfast stroll. The hotel has 30 spacious rooms, free parking and a reputable onsite seafood restaurant, making this a great place to stay.
Enjoy drinks in the lounge where photos of Charlie Chaplin grace the walls – he was a regular at the hotel! Waterville Golf Links are 5 minutes away and Valentia Island attractions are about 20km away.
