9 Hotels in West Cork I’d Happily Stay in Again

For an area home to so much to see and do, it’s probably no surprise that there are some exceptional hotels in West Cork – one of Ireland’s most popular tourist destinations.

Some, like the Gougane Barra Hotel, occupy a setting that feels almost too picturesque to be real, while others, like Casey’s of Baltimore, are right in the middle of bustling harbour villages.

Rather than take you through every hotel in the region, I’ve focused on the West Cork hotels that I’ve stayed in and would happily book again.

My favourite hotels in West Cork

The West of the Rebel County is home to many of the best hotels in Cork, with a little bit of something to tickle every fancy (and budget).

1. Gougane Barra Hotel

While there are many hotels in West Cork, few can compete with the setting of the Gougane Barra Hotel. Sitting on the shores of Gougane Barra Lake, surrounded by mountains and forest, it’s one of the most spectacular hotel settings anywhere in Ireland.

This fifth-generation family-run hotel has been welcoming guests to the valley since the 1800s and still has the warm, personal feel that so many larger hotels lack.

You’re just a short stroll from St Finbarr’s Oratory and the beautiful forest park, making it the perfect base if you want to explore the walking trails before the day-trippers arrive or after they’ve left.

The restaurant has built an excellent reputation for its locally sourced food, but the real highlight is simply slowing down and soaking up the surroundings. Few West Cork hotels leave such a lasting impression.

2. Casey’s of Baltimore

Casey’s of Baltimore has been family-run since 1975 and it’s one of those West Cork hotels that gets the basics consistently right.

The rooms are comfortable and well kept, the welcome is warm without ever feeling over the top and the breakfasts are excellent.

It’s also one of the better places to eat in Baltimore, with fresh West Cork seafood featuring heavily on the menu and lovely views towards the harbour from the dining room.

The location is another big plus. You’re less than a 10-minute walk from Baltimore Harbour, making it a handy base if you’re planning to visit Sherkin Island, Cape Clear or take a boat trip out to Fastnet Rock.

One thing to keep in mind is that the walk between Casey’s and the village follows a narrow road with no footpath in places, so take care, especially after dark.

3. Inchydoney Island Lodge & Spa

If you’re looking for beach hotels in West Cork, Inchydoney is hard to beat. The hotel sits beside Inchydoney Beach, one of the best beaches in West Cork, and many of the rooms look straight out over the Atlantic.

On a wild and windy evening, there’s something magical about sitting by the window watching the waves roll in. The location is what really sets it apart.

You can walk straight onto the beach from the hotel, head for a surf lesson, or take the short drive into Clonakilty for dinner, live music and a wander around one of West Cork’s best towns.

The hotel’s seaweed baths and seawater therapy pool are well worth trying, especially after a day spent exploring. It isn’t the cheapest place to stay, but if you’re celebrating something special or simply fancy treating yourself, it’s one of the best luxury hotels in West Cork.

4. Eccles

I’ve stayed in a lot of spa hotels in Ireland over the years, but few have a setting quite like Eccles. It’s been welcoming guests since 1745 and, despite its age, it strikes a nice balance between old-world character and modern comfort.

The spa is the main draw, with sea-inspired treatments and a thermal suite looking out over Bantry Bay, but the location is every bit as good. You’re minutes from Garnish Island, the Glengarriff Nature Reserve and the start of the Ring of Beara drive.

If you can, book a room with a sea view. Watching the boats come and go across the bay with a coffee in hand is one of those simple pleasures that never seems to get old.

Glengarriff also makes a brilliant base to explore from with many of the best things to do in West Cork a short spin away.

West Cork hotels by the sea

The second section of our guide is packed with some of the best seaside hotels in West Cork, for those of you that fancy gulping down some fresh Atlantic air.

Below, you’ll find the gorgeous Dunmore House and the Maritime to some lesser-known West Cork hotels that pack a punch.

1. Dunmore House Hotel

Perched above Clonakilty Bay, the gorgeous Dunmore House has been run by the same family since 1948 and it feels every bit the family-run hotel.

I have family that return here year after year, thanks to the combination of fantastic service, excellent food and one of the best coastal settings in West Cork.

The location is a big part of the appeal. You’re only a few minutes from Inchydoney Beach, while many of the bedrooms, restaurant and gardens look straight out over the Atlantic.

Food is taken seriously here, with local seafood and West Cork produce featuring heavily on the menu. If you’re travelling with a dog, it’s also one of the few dog friendly hotels in West Cork.

2. West Cork Hotel

If you’re planning to explore several corners of the county, the West Cork Hotel is one of the handiest bases you could choose.

Sitting on the banks of the River Ilen in Skibbereen, you’re within easy walking distance of the town’s pubs, cafés and restaurants, while places like Baltimore, Lough Hyne, Schull and Mizen Head are all an easy drive away.

The hotel itself is comfortable and unpretentious. Rooms overlooking the river are worth requesting if they’re available, while the Bridge Bar is a good spot for a pint after a day’s exploring.

Breakfast is another highlight, with a generous menu served until 11am, which is a welcome bonus if you’re taking things at a slower pace.

3. Clonakilty Park Hotel

The Clonakilty Park is one of the more popular family hotels in Ireland. It’s a 10-minute walk from the centre of Clonakilty, making it easy to head into town for dinner or a wander without needing the car.

The facilities are what set it apart. There’s a 20-metre swimming pool, a well-equipped leisure centre and plenty to keep younger visitors occupied, including an indoor play area and the on-site Adventure Centre with activities like high ropes and mini golf.

If you’re travelling with teenagers, the games area is a welcome addition, too. Rooms are spacious, with everything from standard doubles to two-bedroom apartments and self-catering homes available.

Even if you’re not travelling with kids, it’s a comfortable base for exploring Inchydoney Beach, Galley Head, Rosscarbery and the rest of this corner of West Cork.

4. Actons Hotel Kinsale

Yes, yes – Kinsale isn’t actually part of West Cork, but the vast majority of people think it is, so I’m including my favourite hotel in the town for those looking to make it their base.

While there are plenty of great hotels in Kinsale, if you want to stay at the heart of the action, Actons Hotel is hard to beat. The hotel has been welcoming guests since 1946 and strikes a nice balance between modern comforts and old-fashioned service.

Rooms overlooking the harbour are worth paying extra for if your budget allows, while the swimming pool and leisure centre are a welcome bonus after a day exploring Kinsale on foot.

One of the biggest advantages of staying here is that you can park the car when you arrive and forget about it until it’s time to leave. Everything from the Scilly Walk and the harbour cruises to Kinsale’s best restaurants and pubs is within easy walking distance.

5. The Maritime Hotel

I first stayed at the Maritime back in 2018 and it’s a hotel I’ve recommended countless times since. The biggest draw is the combination of its waterfront setting and central location.

You overlook Bantry Harbour, but you’re also only a couple of minutes’ walk from the town’s pubs, restaurants and the excellent Friday market.

It’s also one of the better-equipped hotels in West Cork. Along with spacious rooms, there’s a 19-metre swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, which make a welcome change after a day exploring places like Sheep’s Head, Mizen Head or the Beara Peninsula.
