Map of Connemara (The National Park and Attractions)

Map of Connemara (The National Park and Attractions)

In this guide, you’ll find a map of Connemara National Park, a map of Connemara’s tourist towns, a map of the area’s main landmarks and a map outlining an itinerary.

Connemara covers a vast stretch of western County Galway, bordered by the Atlantic, Killary Harbour, and Galway Bay.

While definitions vary, Connemara is most commonly seen as the area west of Lough Corrib and Galway City.

Many people assume Connemara National Park is like Killarney National Park, with scenic drives weaving through the heart of it, but that’s not the case. You can’t drive through this park.

Instead, the main access point is via the Visitor Centre and car park in Letterfrack, which is clearly marked on the map above. This is where most people begin their visit, and it’s also the starting point for the popular Diamond Hill hike, shown here rising steeply behind the centre.

The park covers 2,000 hectares (4,900 acres) of mountains, bogland, heath, and forest, with elevations ranging from 25m to 729m at Benbaun, the park’s highest peak.

Established in 1980, it’s one of eight national parks in Ireland, and it’s home to native wildlife like red deer, pine martens, and the iconic Connemara pony.

My second Connemara map outlines the main things to do across the region. Some of the most notable attractions are:

My third Connemara map outlines how to spend 2 days exploring the region, using Clifden as a base.

This Connemara itinerary takes in scenic drives, short hikes, beaches, and historical sites, starting from the Galway City side (you can change if needed).

You’ll visit places like Kylemore Abbey, Diamond Hill, the Sky Road, and Dog’s Bay, along with some of the best things to do in Galway.

My final map shows where to stay in Connemara. Now, this doesn’t show all of the tourist-towns in the region – it shows the places that think make a great base to explore from.

While my go-to is Clifden, Leenaun has an awful lot to offer visitors. Roundstone and the Renvyle Peninsula make great bases, too!
