If you’re searching for unique places to go glamping in Ireland with friends, this place should tickle your fancy.
I’ve developed a slightly unhealthy obsession with unique Irish rentals. It all started when we published a guide to 20+ of the most unique places to stay in Ireland in 2020.
Places like this – a hobbit hut in Mayo – keep the obsession going on and on and on. I’ll stop rambling – you’ll discover everything you need to know below!
A hobbit hut on the Wild Atlantic Way
If you’ve ever wondered what it’d be like to live like a hobbit for a night or two, then this place should tickle your fancy.
The lads at Mayo Glamping have created a funky little earth-covered hobbit hut that sleeps up to 4 people comfortably.
You’ll find this Airbnb in Castlebar where it’s nested in the rolling hills of the central Mayo countryside.
It’s a handy:
- 5-minute drive from the National Museum of Country life
- 25-minute drive to the buzzy town of Westport or Ballina
- 15-minute drive from Foxford.
It’s also a stone’s throw from an endless number of walking, hiking and cycling routes.
A hot tub, sauna, and bar…
I was sold on the idea of kipping in a hobbit hut, but it gets better.
Way better.
This Airbnb boasts a toasty wood-fired sauna and hot tub and an outdoor kitchen area where you can cook some pizza or fire up a BBQ.
There’s also a bar (you’ll need to BYOB).
To top it off, there’s also a movie hall where you can kick back with a film (via chromecast).
What it’s like on the inside
I wasn’t expecting much from the inside of this place, but it looks pretty damn cosy.
The reviews on Airbnb are also excellent, especially with regards to cleanliness and the service provided by the host, Stephen:
‘An amazing hobbit/fairy experience. Stephen and his family are absolutely lovely and really made the trip. Amazing hospitality.
Was also lovely to meet the other people who were staying there. Amazing craftmanship… still can’t believe Stephen built the whole place himself…. such talent and thought gone into every aspect of it. Just sorry couldn’t stay longer but dying to go back again another time. Thank you Stephen!’
The one thing to note is that the kitchen, toilet, and shower units are communal.
How much a night will set you back
So, this place is clearly popular, as it’s fairly booked up. Here’s what 2 nights mid-week in April will set you back for a party of 4 (note: there’s no guarantee we’ll be back to normal by then):
- Total for two nights: €375
- Cost per person: €93.75
- Book a night here
- Nab €30 off your first Airbnb stay with this code
- Note: If you book a night using the link above, we’ll make a tiny commission. You won’t pay extra, but you’ll help us keep this site running. Cheers!
Have you stayed here? If so, let me know how you found it in the comments section below!

Hey Eve – you’ll have to click through to the Airbnb page and see how much they’re charging per night. We don’t actually own these (I wish).
Hi Do you have any vacancies for summer time
Hi Mary – you’d have to give the hosts a shout on Airbnb directly to see what kind of availability they have. Cheers – Keith
How do I check availabliliy please?
Hey Charlotte. This isn’t a property that I own (I wish!). You’d need to click the link to the Aribnb in the article above and contact them through there. Cheers. Keith
